Aurora (Kim Stanley Robinson) —
I’ve read the Mars trilogy so I knew this wouldn’t be a light, easy read — in fact, if I hadn’t been able to listen to the audiobook while doing something else, I’m pretty sure I’d never have made it through the more prosaic parts — but I didn’t expect it so be so sad and grim. How could it not, though. How could any writer of hard science-fiction express anything but existential despair in this day and age.
Anyway. An absolutely essential update to the Mars trilogy, and an important retort to billionaires dreaming of escaping the Earth’s cradle. I’m still crying from the bodysurfing chapter.
