Use of Weapons (Iain M. Banks) —
People like to discuss how absurd it is for Musk and Bezos to claim they love the Culture novels even though the series describes a communist utopia. But so far I’ve spent most of the books wondering if Banks ever actually believed in the Culture as a utopia.
Bottomline, though, I just don’t like him much as a writer. How does a story about a society that lives beyond the gender binary contain so much testosterone, and even objectification? The character’s point of view is a nice excuse for a while, but it gets old when you get beyond a hundred pages.
