I have a class that had a pretty decent atmosphere overall, until a couple weeks ago, when the school switched us to a crappy, cold, dark, decrepit, jaillike classroom, and suddenly everyone was constantly on edge, including myself. Nobody was motivated to do the activities, my explanations were confused, students were snapping at each other.
Today, I asked to switch to yet another room, and suddenly the atmosphere got friendly and relaxed again.
When we talk about the importance of good schools, that includes the actual quality of the building itself. Good heating, good lighting, modern amenities and a fitting room size relative to the group are crucial to setting up a good learning environment.
