Underachievement Unlocked

My life: a lot of potential and very little realization.

Very few posts on this blog, as well. But you might find some entertaining stuff if you go back a few years in the archives.

www.garoo.net — version 1869.0

Online, one day late. That’ll teach me to start coding a revolutionary layout (well, with brand new Javascript at least) at 11pm.

I had been wanting to change my layout for a while, but I was always stuck: I always knew the Lifeblog-inspired calendar-style wasn’t really convenient, but I couldn’t find anything better for showing short posts with their thumbnails. And I’m not going to give up on the thumbnails any time soon: it works perfectly, and I even made a little .NET program to generate them in a couple of clicks, so I’m not gonna stop.

I was finally helped by the realization that my inline-window Javascript wasn’t working on Explorer 5. As I already explained, I didn’t put these scripts here only to mess up with my readers, but more importantly as a beta test for the next gayattitude redesign (which may never happen, but you never know, I could finally have the courage to get through with it). As much as I can afford to lose blog readers because they’re not using Firefox, it’s more of a problem on gayattitude. We’re already losing some users every once in a while because of mysterious MSIE incompatibilities, so I’d rather not push it too much.

So I started thinking about a better solution than “if(isMSIE5) return;”, and then got an epiphany: rather than using dynamic iframes, which was already far from ideal when it did work (the iframe necessarily obstructs the original content, which is a bit disconcerting), couldn’t I dynamically resize frames instead? Two seconds of googling later: I can! Hence the new version. (The subtleties of which you might not realize if your browser window is big enough. Try resizing it down and then viewing some posts.)

The — hopefully temporary, but you never know, I’m not really feeling creative these days — page header visuals have been made with Charas.EX, a pixel character generator that might get used in a possibly upcoming webcomic by garoo. Might be. Some day. Anyway, thanks to yom for letting me know of the RPGMaker scene.

P.S. Had to add tables in the home page display because Explorer choked on my divs: some text chunks disappeared and reappeared without any reason, like only Explorer can do. Hey, if the whole universe wants me to keep abusing tables, I’m not gonna fight!

P.S. Of no importance to you unless you had trouble accessing the site today between 11am and noon: thanks to Satisfy Any (no, nothing kinky about it) I could finally set up my .htaccess to ask anyone connected from ACaen-* a password in order to access the site. Much simpler than having to remove the .htaccess every time I want to answer a comment. Thanks to Christophe qui n’existe pas.
